Accident & Trauma Counselling
Do these describe the way you behave or feel?
- Avoidance of thoughts, feelings, activities, places, things or people related to a traumatic experience
- Enhanced or lost memory about an event
- Changes in your eating, sleeping or grooming habits
- Tearfulness, irritability or outbursts of anger
- Difficulty concentrating
- More nervous than usual
- Feeling distant from others
Have you, or a loved one been involved in, or witnessed, a serious motor vehicle accident or other traumatic event?
If an event involved real or threatened serious injury or death to you or others, you’ve discovered that your normal coping skills do not work well in abnormal conditions. You might be experiencing sudden, intrusive and distressing “flashbacks” while sleeping or awake, or unusual feelings, thoughts or reactions to normal events in your everyday life.
What you are experiencing goes beyond the pain of your physical injuries. You may be experiencing emotional injuries which are "invisible" to others.
You have been introduced to a whole new world of strange, unfamiliar events, experiences and routines. Like visits with your doctor, your lawyer, your insurance claims adjuster and other rehabilitation specialists. Discovering new ways of coping with the activities of daily living; sometimes depending on others to help you with bathing, dressing and grooming.
If this describes what you are going through – it’s time to talk with those special people in your life. Open, two-way discussions about these kinds of experiences are effective beginnings to the process of ending them.
