We really cannot enjoy things in life without accepting that fact that their loss to us will be a very painful emotional experience. When we lose a loved one, or a family pet, or any of our sentimental possessions through a fire, or “break-and-enter”, we can experience a sense of monumental loss. The sense of loss is a perfectly natural emotion to experience. However, when that sense of loss remains on-going for a substantial period of time (more than a few months) and becomes so unbearable that if affects the individual’s life to the point of social withdrawal, lack of sleep, minimal social grooming, etc, then it is time to seek professional assistance. As a psychologist, I can provide the individual with treatment strategies that will allow a slow and gradual return to normal activities of life, while maintaining a sense of healthy remembrance for the loss.
