It’s important to understand how the medication for depression (as well as for any other condition) works
December 21, 2011
Patients frequently ask me questions regarding their prescribed medication for their anxiety or depression and whether the medication “works well” with other medication for their other physical conditions, such as diabetes or heart problems. I remind them that most psychologists are not qualified to prescribe medication, but that we have a certain amount of knowledge about them.
I always encourage a patient to discuss their specific concerns with their prescribing physician and\or their dispensing pharmacist. However, some general knowledge is important as a foundation.
Some of the most common symptoms of depression are fatigue, loss of interest in daily activity and feeling “blue”. These conditions can also be a part of the clinical picture for a variety of other diagnoses, as well, so a complete and thorough examination for both physical issues and emotional issues is paramount in establishing a correct diagnosis.
Medication for depression works a little differently than medication for anxiety, both in how long it takes to reach optimal levels, as well as how long it lasts within a specific individual. Some medications have more side-effects than others.
It is important to discuss any unusual experiences you have since commencing medication with your prescribing physician. |
